How to Connect from Vancouver, BC

There are two main ways to join these nets as a D-STAR operator in the Vancouver area. Both methods let you reach reflectors worldwide; the only difference is the first hop.

Method 1 — Via a Local D-STAR Repeater or Gateway

Some local repeaters in the Lower Mainland are D-STAR-capable and may already be linked to a reflector, or can be linked on request. Contact the repeater trustee or your local club to find out which gateway is available and what reflectors it supports.

  1. Program your D-STAR radio with the local gateway frequency and URCALL / RPT settings.
  2. Transmit a link command (e.g., CQCQCQ with the reflector in URCALL) or confirm the gateway is pre-linked.
  3. Once linked, use CQCQCQ as your URCALL for all net traffic.
  4. Useful contacts: VECTOR (vectorradio.ca) and local ICOM D-STAR user groups.

Method 2 — Via a Personal Hotspot (Pi-Star / MMDVM)

A personal hotspot is a small, low-power radio device that connects your D-STAR radio to the internet and from there to any reflector. This is the most flexible option for home use.

  1. Set up your hotspot (Pi-Star or similar) on a clear simplex frequency (UHF or VHF).
  2. In the Pi-Star dashboard, select D-STAR mode and enter the reflector you want: for example, XLX088A, REF014C, or XLX307D.
  3. Set your radio to the hotspot frequency. Set URCALL to CQCQCQ and your MY CALL to your callsign.
  4. Key up briefly to confirm the link, then join the net as normal.
